The Washington Estonian Society marked the 107th anniversary of Estonia’s independence on Saturday, February 22nd, at the Latvian Lutheran Church in Rockville, Maryland. The event began with a heartfelt rendition of the Estonian National Anthem. Alan Tomson, President of the Washington Estonian Society, welcomed guests, followed by greetings from Marju Rink Able, representing the Estonian American National Council (EANC). The evening featured a moving performance by the Baltimore-Washington Mixed Choir, joined later by children from the Estonian School. Ambassador Kristjan Prikk delivered an insightful speech, reflecting on Estonia’s journey to independence and discussing the current crisis in Ukraine. The highlight of the evening was a stunning concert by Estonian soprano Hälis Rünk, accompanied by former Estonian athlete and pianist Egle Uljas-Černá. Guests enjoyed a delightful potluck dinner, with a variety of delicious dishes provided by the Washington Estonian Society and attendees. The evening concluded with remarks by Alan Tomson on the importance of Estonians warning Americans about the danger of Russia and its aggression in Ukraine, followed by a social hour fostering great camaraderie and lasting memories.
